Time to service your boiler

At Enviroleak, our technicians are regularly called to homes where an oil leak from the heating oil tank or from the heating system requires immediate and urgent clean up.  It’s surprising to us to find that the majority of heating boilers have not been serviced recently or adequately. The heating oil boiler requires an annual service.  Now is a good time to order this service, before the winter sets in and you need your heating purring away nicely every day.

Failure to get your boiler serviced can result in higher fuel cost as consumption can be higher than necessary due to soot build up. Servicing a kerosene boiler, which has not been serviced for a couple of years, should bring about an immediate fuel reduction of around 5%.   There is also a real danger in not servicing your boiler that leaks and faults can occur.   A regular service ensures that the oil boiler will be more reliable during those long months of heavy use.

What is included in a boiler service?

Always use a recognized registered company and technician when having your boiler serviced.  During the service of the boiler, you should expect the following checks.

  • The flue, which is the piece of pipe or duct that moves gases and hot air from the combustion chamber of the boiler to the outside, will be inspected and if necessary, replaced.
  • There will be an inspection of the fire safety valve for signs of damage or oil leakage at the joints.
  • A good boiler technician will also check the oil tank condition and particularly look for cracks and damage. Cracked tanks can be temporarily fixed with a bar of soap or with duct tape, but these are very temporary measures, and a new tank is urgently required.
  • The technician will review and reset the boiler controls.

If your system is over 8 years old, it may well be time to upgrade the heating system to renewable energy and your technician should be able to advise on this and to direct you to the government grants which are available.

When to call Enviroleak

If you smell oil from your own tank or that of your neighbours, pick up the phone and talk to our trained staff. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to advise and assist with suspected and confirmed oil leaks.  If you suspect that the tank or boiler is leaking, don’t waste valuable time where damage can occur.

Signs of a faulty boiler

Listen to the startup noises of your boiler. An early warning signal can be spluttering and misfiring and if this occurs, then call the boiler service technician

A pool of water under the oil boiler can indicate that the pipes directly under the boiler are corroded and leaking. Water damage from a leaking boiler might cause a growth of mould and fungi, which can cause hazardous effects on your health. Mould spreads quickly in damp conditions, causing health issues, coughing, sneezing and even difficulty in breathing.

If you think that your boiler is leaking, do not attempt to diagnose or fix the problem yourself. Switch the boiler off at the mains and turn off the water, using the stopcock. Call Enviroleak or your technician. Oil leaking from the boiler may be attributed to a damaged valve or pipe in the heating system.  A persistent leak may cause severe damage to the property.   If the heating is not working to its optimum, and the house is not heating properly, call your boiler service man for advice and a service of the heating system, including the boiler, tanks, and radiators.

An annual servicing of your heating Boiler is a small price to pay for avoiding bigger trouble down the road.   Stay warm. Stay safe.
