Who is responsible

Anyone who uses, stores, fills, transports or manufactures hazardous substances, such as oils,  is responsible for making sure the substance is contained and used in a way that won’t result in a release to the environment. They're also responsible for cleaning-up any leaks and deal with any consequences of the release.

Whether you own or live in a property with a domestic oil tank, you should check you have adequate home insurance to cover assessment and clean-up of a leak, and any effects of the leak on the land or ground.
